Welcome to Responsible AI: For a Fair Future, a course and reference guide developed in 2025 for the third-year course in the Applied Computer Science program, Specialization in Artificial Intelligence at Hogeschool PXL. This book is the result of research conducted by myself and my fellow students, exploring emerging AI trends, frameworks, and practical applications in real-world contexts. While our team carried out the research collaboratively, I undertook the task of compiling these findings into this structured course guide.
Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant concept—it is transforming industries, governments, and society today. With this rapid evolution comes a responsibility: to design, implement, and manage AI systems ethically, sustainably, and effectively. This book aims to provide students, professionals, and enthusiasts with a structured roadmap for understanding how AI impacts business, society, and technology, and how responsible practices can be embedded from the start.
Throughout this course, we explore a wide range of frameworks and tools, including:
-
Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) to assess the maturity of AI technologies.
-
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to align AI initiatives with societal and environmental impact.
-
The Gartner Hype Cycle to understand market expectations and adoption curves for emerging AI technologies.
-
Business Model Canvas to connect AI solutions with strategic and operational business considerations.
Each module in this course is designed to build your understanding incrementally, from foundational concepts to practical applications. You will explore ethical considerations, learn to analyze AI trends critically, and develop strategies for implementing AI responsibly in real-world contexts.
This book also encourages a hands-on approach: case studies and references are included to support active learning and critical thinking. By engaging with these materials, you will not only learn the mechanics of AI but also how to navigate its societal, economic, and ethical implications.
Whether you are a student exploring AI trends, a professional evaluating AI adoption in your organization, or a researcher interested in responsible innovation, this course will equip you with the knowledge and frameworks needed to make informed, responsible decisions in AI.
We hope this resource inspires curiosity, collaboration, critical thinking, and a commitment to using AI in ways that benefit both organizations and society.
Welcome to the journey of Responsible AI: For a Fair Future.
